Occupation

Herbert Henry Stevens was born in Port Elgin/Saugeen Township in 1869 where his parents farmed. By 1881, he was living in Port Elgin with his mother and older sister Mary. By 1891 he was working as an accountant in a Port Elgin factory. In 1896, he along with other local businessmen, reorganized the Port Elgin Brush Co. into the Stevens-Hepner Co. Ltd. and continued to make brushes and brooms - a business he continued in until his death in 1944. Stevens was issued nine patents, including one for a brush (Canadian patent 125170) in 1910 and another for a brush handle (Canadian patent 192137) in 1919, which were likely used in the design and manufacture of Stevens-Hepner products.
