Rev. J.C. Tolmie was ordained as Presbyterian minister in 1889. He began his ministry at First Presbyterian Church, Brantford. He was then called to St. Andrew's Church, Windsor in 1894 and laboured there until his retirement. During his time in Windsor, he became prominent in the civic life of the city, serving two terms as a member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly for Windsor, and also as Chairman of the Windsor Board of Education for several years. After returning to Southampton around 1923, he supplied the pulpit at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Southampton. He also served as Reeve of Southampton from 1926-1930 and was Mayor in 1931. He was Reeve again from 1933 until his unexpected death in 1938. In or around 1931, he went to Saskatoon to supply for Dr. Brown, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. He was reeve and mayor of Southampton for various periods between 1926 and 1938, and served as chaplain during WWI. He became a Liberal Member of the Legilsature for Windsor and later retired to Southampton. |

In the early years of the war, James Tolmie resigned his ministerial charge and served as Chaplain overseas with the rank of Major. James Tolmie became a Third Degree Mason, Windsor Lodge #403 in 1896 and was also a charger member of Masonic Rose Lodge #500, Windsor, 1911. Upon his return to Southampton, he was a prominent member of St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge #131, Southampton. |
