He built the first sawmill in the Lion's Head area, later sold to Watt, Moore, Vandusen. He built a log cabin in 1878, later replacing it with a store and dwelling. He served for many years as Secretary-treasurer of the Presbyterian Church (whose initial services were held in Webster sawmill), For 20 years, he was the issuer of Marriage Licenses, Conveyor and Clerk for the municipality (Eastnor Township). For eight summers, he was lighthouse keeper at Wingfield Basin / Cabot Head (1896-1904). |

He came with his parents to Canada in 1861, settling in Elora. In 1875, he and his wife moved to the Peninsula, being one of the first settlers in Lion's Head. First lightkeeper at Cabot Head 1896-1904. |
