Occupation |
After graduating in 1875, Dr. Hiram Wigle practiced medicine in Essex Centre for approximately six months. He then moved to Wiarton, where he successfully practiced for over 50 years. Wigle was an active member of the community, having been one of Albemarle's former Reeves for two years, a member of the School Board for ten years, a member of the Council Board, the President of the local Conservative Association, and the Reeve of Wiarton (1887 and 1888). As Reeve of Wiarton, he introduced a new waterworks system. After the incorporation of Wiarton as a town, Wigle ran for Mayor, losing by a narrow margin of about 20 votes. For 35 years and until his death, Wigle served as the Medical Officer of Albemarle. An Anglican, Wigle was also an Ex-Warden of Trinity Church. At age 76, Wigle died at his home in Wiarton after a short illness. He is buried in Colpoy's Bay Cemetery (Edgehill). |
