Description |
"J.H. Jones" was built by Henry Marlton in Goderich, Ontario in 1888 and was originally in the charge of Captain Angus MacAulay of Southampton. The ship was 107x21 feet and 208 tonnes. She was purchased by the Crawford Tug Co. around 1900 (some sources say 1903), and was rebuilt in 1903 by Owen Sound Dry Dock Co., Ltd. She was then captained by James V. Crawford and a crew of about 11 Wiarton men. This 100-foot, wooden freight and passenger ship made runs from Owen Sound along the east shore of the Bruce Peninsula to Manitoulin Island. She was last seen afloat on November 22, 1906 off passing the Cape Croker lighthouse, heavily laden with freight and passengers, on her way up the eastern shore of the Bruce Peninsula. Wreckage was found five days later on Christian Island. About thirty crew and passengers lost their lives. The wreck of the J.H. Jones was discovered in September 2018 by a team of divers, including Ken Merryman, Jerry Eliason and Chris Kohl, along with Captain J.V. Crawford's great-grandson Robert Crawford.
