Description |
The Marquette (bark) was built in 1856. This ship, transporting corn, came from Chicago and was headed to Collingwood. During a storm on November 20, 1967, it sank in the Georgian Bay by Hope Island. No fatalities in crash, only cargo and vessel lost. This wreck was referred to for almost ten years as "the Hope Island Wreck." Research in 1985 by members of the Ontario Marine Heritage Committee and the late Dr. Richard Wright of the Institute for Great Lakes Research, Bowling Green State University, proved the wreck to be that of Marquette.
