Description |
John Hepner came to Port Elgin from Napanee in 1883. He, along with six local businessmen, established a plant named "Port Elgin Brush Co." After two years a fire destroyed the plant. Another one was built, but it fell into financial difficulties. In 1896 the business was re-organized and taken over by H.H. Stevens, John Hepner and E.H. Schiedel under the name "Stevens-Hepner Co., Ltd." In 1901 Mr. Schiedel retired, and Mr. Hepner passed away in 1922. H.H. Stevens became the leader after that point. Under his guidance the company grew from 30 to over 200 by 1944, the time of his death. Mr. R.J. Pequegnat became the second President in 1944 and in 1962 sold to W.G. Campbell. In 1908 the company took over the former Dominion Brush Co. of Toronto, thus adding a line of toiletware goods under the trademark name "Keystone." Around the early 1960s, the Company expanded the product line from traditional wood-based to more plastic-based products. They also added curling brooms and brushes among other items. Additional buildings and additions were added between the 1960s and 1980s. Source: "The Stevens-Hepner Company Ltd." Bruce County Historical Society Yearbook 1984, p. 64-67. |
