Description |
"The Body and the Bell" describes the story of the 1865 collision of two steamships: "Pewabic" and "Meteor" in 1865 on the Michigan coast, near Alpena. This booklet is focused on determining events associated with the discovery of the body of Miss Julia Rumsey wearing a "Pewabic" life vest washed to shore just north of Southampton, and the later acquisition of Southampton's first town hall bell, possibly associated with the Rumsey family. The author provides evidence to suggest that a previous article about the body and the bell contained some erroneous information. |
