From the Preface: "This is a story of two breweries and the families that founded them. It details the settlement and establishment of a brewery in Carlsruhe, Ontario, and twenty years later, another in Owen Sound Ontario, and follows the decline and closing of these small family businesses. This book covers the descendants of Wilhelm Schwan and Louisa Kuntz, but it starts one generation earlier with Louisa's father, Jakob Kuntz. Jakob was the patriarch of the Schwan family in Carlsruhe. He started the brewery in Carlsruhe and trained future generations of brewers." The main breweries discussed are the Lion Brewery in Carlsruhe and the Schwan Bros. Spring Brewery in Owen Sound. The book also includes chapters on "Life in Owen Sound 1885 to 1913," "Local Option and the Delcine" (Prohibition), and "Changes in Carlsrhue." In "The Competition" chapter, information is provided about Huether's Neustadt - Crystal Spring Brewery; Formosa Spring Brewery; Farquharson and Grainger, Walkerton; Graf Brewery, Chepstow; and Eaton Bros., Owen Sound. |
