Description |
This book reviews the BMTS story, which is one of the changes and challenges along a long line of history. In the early years of this century, rural life in Ontario was changing rapidly. In the Township of Bruce, farm families wanted a telephone system to link them to one another; and to nearby towns and villages The Bruce Municipal Telephone System, like hundreds of other such systems, was established to fill that need. From 1910 when the first petitions were circulated, to 1994 and fibre optic technology, the BMTS has grown to serve the lakeside communities of Bruce County. With exchanges in Tiverton, Paisley, Port Elgin, and Kincardine it has over 13,000 customer lines. For some time it was the largest system of its kind in Canada, and one of the most successful. In 1993, it was converted to a public utility of the Township of Bruce. This book was commissioned by the BMTS to chronicle the beginnings, growth and modernization of the System, ad to recognize the people who founded and nurtured it, and those who keep it running today.
