"May Military Demonstration, Walkerton - On May 24, 1916, one of the largest crowds in the history of Walkerton assembled in the exhibition grounds to witness a Military Demonstration given by the Battalion. Special features included physical exercises, sports, Battalion Drill and a March Past. June Presentation of Colours Weekend Walkerton to Chesley - The Battalion marched from Walkerton to Chesley on Friday June 3, 1916 and were given a hearty reception when entering the town. Some stayed in private houses, while others stayed in public buildings, or camped. On the morning of Saturday, June 4,1916, the Battalion rested on the grounds of the Chesley High School overlooking the Saugeen River (where many had also camped overnight). They then marched through Chesley, four abreast, to the Exhibition Grounds and formed for the ceremony in the formation of three sides of a square. The colours were presented by Mrs. M.A. Halliday, with Ontario Premier William Howard Hearst (whose birthplace was Tara, Bruce County, Ontario) and Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Johnson officiating. At the end of the ceremony, the spectators witnessed a March Past by the Battalion with the Colours. On Sunday morning, June 5, 1916, a military church service was held in the Exhibition grounds. On Monday, June 6 the Battalion marched through the decorated streets of Chesley, filled with spectators, on its way back to Walkerton. There, it was met by all the students from the local schools lining both sides of the street, waving and cheering." Sources: Bartley, Allan.
