Title |
Southampton members of the first contingent, First Battalion, First World War |
Date |
August 17, 1914 |
Description |
Photograph featuring two rows of soldiers standing near the back of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Southampton. On reverse, hand-printed identification indicates: "Southampton members of the First Contingent, First Battalion, First World War, 1914-1918.. Back Row: ____ Smith Ernie Boyle, Bill Mouck [Billy Morich?], Bert Meyer, Herb Ramsden. Front Row: W.J. Knowles, Herb Gouch, Clayton Knechtel, Harvey Eby. Captain - Lionel Tranter." [The same image identified as BCM&CC item number A995.033.001 includes the names Bill Smith, E.W. Gooch instead of Herb Gouch, and Billy Morich instead of Nill Mouck.] Feedback from researcher received in October, 2023: [Man second from left in front row] "is not E.W. Gouch[Gooch] or Herb Gouch[Gooch]. He is Alfred William Gooch, RN 6801." The following sources confirm the name correction: Bruce Remembers (profile for Alfred William Gooch), Library and Archives Canada, War Graves Commission website, and Southampton's Honour Roll from the Beacon newspaper issue May 31st, 1917. |
