Title |
Barn and windmill, circa 1916 : concession 3, lot 11 |
Date |
circa 1916 |
Description |
Digital image of a barn and windmill located on Lot 11, Concession 3, Saugeen Township. Several cows and a few horses are partially visible in the foreground (gathered outside the barn). This property was owned by Jacob Schwass. The following information was provided by the donor: "The patches on the [barn] roof show where the family punched holes in the roof in order to chain the rafters to the beams. The mill turned a shaft which was geared to a line shaft which ran the length of the barn, and powered a variety of farm equipment. [Most power mills of this kind were destroyed during the Good Friday storm of 1913, which this barn survived]. Daniel Schwass, son of Jacob Schwass, is shown in this image [partially visible standing in the lower level of the barn]. He climbed the 90 foot mast of the mill to turn it out of the wind during the storm, which likely saved both the mill and the barn." |
