Description |
A wooden mail organizer. The container is a wooden box finished in a light natural brown colour. It has several slotted areas in the front and a single drawer at the base. It is square shaped with solid sides that slightly curve to make half circle shapes at the bottom sides. There is a total of 28 slots with a row of seven slots at the top and four rows. There is a slight extension of the wood base to create a flat top to the drawer. The drawer (part b) below has a plain front and a single wood knob in the centre. |
Provenance |
The mail organizer was used in the Post Office for "Dumblane". The Post Office opened in 1856. It was first operated by postmaster William Wallace. The Fraser family owned the lot the Post Office was on and when they became Postmasters, they operated it out of their home. John Fraser was appointed Post Master on April 1, 1858 and would resign on June 30, 1872. His son Donald would take over as Post Master until he resigned on October 18, 1880. The Post Office closed May 31, 1921. |
