Description |
Child's rectangular metal toy chest. The chest is made of brown metal with darker brown metal trim decorated with rivets. The corners of the chest are reinforced with metal. Originally, there were two leather handles on each side of the chest, but now there is only one on the right hand side. The front of the chest has two metal clasps that still function. In the middle of the two clasps is a metal locking device. The maker's mark is on the clasp: "BRITISH MADE PAT APPD FOR". The chest is decorated with stickers represent different countries. On the front of the chest are Japan and Africa. On top of the chest is Scotland and Belgium. The inside of the chest is a cream colour and decorated with green and red outlines children reading, playing with balls, blocks, horns and each other, and decorating Christmas trees. There are also toy elephants boats, balls, dolls, and clown toys decorating the inside of the chest. A removable rectangular shelf sits on two ledges near the top of the chest. |

The toy chest belonged to Dorothy Lamont (nee MacEachern), who was born in Kitchener, Ontario in 1926. As a young adult, Dorothy came to Port Elgin to teach at Saugeen District High School. |
