Description |
A handheld school bell. The main body of the bell has a wide circular shaped base that narrows in towards the top. There is a slight single bevelled edge along the widest and smallest part of the bell body. Inside the bell there is a small single wire clapper that is hooked from the top of the handle insert. The clapper consists of the rod and a small round iron ball at the end. There is black text on the inside of the bell that reads "Original - Southampton Public School 1878". The top of the bell has a maple coloured wooden handle. The handle has a skinny base and widens towards the hand area. The handle is smooth and has a glossy finish. There is a small point at the top of the handle that is the same brass as the bell. |

The bell was used in the Southampton Public School by G.C. Huston who was principal for 37 years beginning in 1924. The bell was passed down to the donor by her brother, Bob Chatterton. |
