Description |
A surveyor's transit level and box. The main device (part a) is a long telescope body with eyepiece at one end and lens at the other. The lens has a gold rim and glass face. There is a metal lens shade (part b) that is a cylinder shaped thin metal tube that slides on the end. There is a short tube like shape at the top of the telescope body. The body is supported by a rectangular shaped frame. The frame holds a bubble level directly inside. The bubble level is supported in a black tube with clear glass windows that have several black notches on the top. There is a brass metal plaque on the side of the frame reading "J. Frank Raw Co. Ltd - Toronto - No.3209". Below the frame is a circular shaped base that has four large brass screws that sits on a brass dial. The dial has a textured outer edge. The level is supported inside a wooden box (part c). The box is rectangular shaped and a light Chesnut colour. There is a main leather strap that attaches on the sides. The box has a hinged lid that is closed by two clasp hooks at the front. The inside of the box has divider sections that have green felt on the top edges. The felt areas are indented and curved to help support the main level body and prevent it from moving. There is a wooden knob attached at the base that supports the lens shade. The hinged lid area has two dividers with felt edges. There is a white paper maker's tag at the lid section that reads "Charles Bruning Company (Canada) Ltd" with information below along with the adjustment date of July 7, 1960. There is a loose paper label (part d) that indicates a repair and inspection date of December 30,1968 for Bruce County. There is a maker's tag on the lid of the box that reads "J.Frank Raw Co. Ltd.". |
