Description |
A cherry and butternut wood chest with inlaid wood detail. The chest has a mirror (b) with two shelves on either side. The main chest piece (a) is comprised of four drawers on the top level (c-f) and three long horizontal drawers on the bottom (g-i). The mirror is rectangular in shape and has two toned wood detail. The top of the mirror has a scalloped top edge and a two toned triangular shape in the centre. Below is the glass which has the inlay design around the entire border. The mirror is supported in a larger rectangular frame with decorative details on the sides. On the base of the mirror there is a long supportive piece that holds the two shelves on either side. The shelves are similar shape to candlestick supports with a half circular base and same scalloped edge along the top. The chest is tall and has a row of drawers on the top section, three horizontal drawers and decorative curved legs on the sides. The top row have two square shaped drawers on each end and two small and narrow drawers in the centre. The chest has the same two toned decorative inlaid pattern along the drawer's borders and on the legs. The inlay pattern consists of dark and light wood in repeating triangle shapes to create one square with two triangles on the outside. All of the drawers have a dark diamond wood front which holds the drawer pulls in place. The top level drawers all have one single pull while the horizontal drawers have two. The drawer pulls are a black knob which hang down from a gold coloured metal clasp. The centre of the horizontal drawers have a star shape in the centre. The same star is also above the side legs. The legs have the same two tone coloured inlay with an arrow pattern running down the centre. |

The chest was a part of various furniture pieces that were made for the Polfuss family by an unknown German furniture maker in the Formosa, Ontario area. |
