Description |
A wooden tennis racket from the Southampton Tennis Club. The racket has a narrow handle which is straight until it begins to curve outwards to make a circular shape. The circular shape at the top has plastic strings woven in from the sides to make a net where the tennis ball bounces off of. The racket is painted white but also showcases natural wood stains in light and dark tones. The handle is light brown leather with a dark brown stripe. Above the handle there is a 'W' in gold with black outline and "Made in U.S.A." underneath it. The rest of the handle is white with two diamond shapes. Where the handle begins to curve to the circle part there is "Jack Kramer" and crown and "Pro Staff". On the actual circle section there is "Wilson" in gold with black outline. The front and back of the racket are identical in appearance. There is information on the sides of the racket. On the left side it reads "Endorsed by Jack Kramer for Championship Play". On the other side it reads "Kramer Pro Staff Specifications 4 1/2 Grip - Light (Range 12.00 - 12.50 oz.) Balanced Light in Hand Consistent Flexibility". At the bottom of the handle there is a plastic cover with a "W' that would have been in red (paint worn off now). |
Provenance |
The tennis racket was donated from the Southampton Tennis Club who celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2006. Membership in the Southampton Tennis Club ("STC") began in 1956 at around 125 members. Membership broke 500 by the mid-1960s, and grew to over 1,500 members in 2005. The club continues to operate. |
