Description |
One turnip seeder. The seeder has a main rectangular frame that supports two blue coloured boxes that taper in towards the bottom. The front of the frame has two iron plough tynes that are in front of the boxes. Below there are two large wooden cylindrical shaped rollers and one long roller at the back. The frame has two wooden handles at the back with a wire attached in the centre. There is a chain and pulley below the handles secured to a rod that sits inside the blue boxes. The chain is attached to the pulley wheel and secured around the cylindrical shaped roller at the back. |

This double row turnip seeder was used by the Smellie family of Eldserslie Township. James Smellie came with his family to Elderslie in 1860, and settled on Lot 23, Concession 2. The farm continued in the family to James’ son, Charles, who passed away in 1954. |
