Description |
Fulton brand set of printing blocks, including inks, stamp pads, setting ruler and box. All stamps or print blocks have wooden handles that are rectangular in shape with what they represent in black on top. Stamps are finished on all but two sides. Handles taper in, then back out to be rectangular on the top and the bottom. In most cases, the bottom are larger than the tops. Stamping surfaces are rubber and are rectangular in shape. Parts A-Z: Letter blocks or stamps from the letter A-Z. All letters are capital letters. Part AA: Print block or stamp. Stamping surface has a proper right pointing hand. Parts BB-KK: Print blocks or stamps representing the numbers 0-9. Parts LL-SS: Print blocks or stamps representing grammar and symbols. Symbols and grammar marks include the symbol for money, a question mark, an & sign, the fraction of 1/2, an exclamation mark, a comma, a cents symbol, and a period. Parts TT-XX: Print block or stamps with words on them. Words represented are "FOR", "PER", "ONLY", "REDUCED TO", and "EACH". Parts YY-AAA: Print blocks or stamps of geometric shapes. Shapes represented are an elongated oval with a dot on each end, a clover, and a shape that resembles a budded flower and stem with leaves. Part BBB:Ruler. Ruler is made of unfinished light coloured wood and is rectangular in shape. Running down the centre of the ruler is a rectangular channel. Above the channel is a rule marked out in inches that goes to 14. Below the channel is "PUT THE SHORT END OF SPACERS IN THE SLOT" and "Sign and Price Marker Ruler" in black font. Parts CCC-EEE: Three ink bottles. Bottles are short in height and have square bottoms. Body rises straight from base and round in at the shoulders to create a cylindrical neck. Neck flares out at mouth and has a flat lip. Bottles are made from clear glass. On each bottles is a rectangular dark yellow paper label with "THE FULTON FILL-IN" in black front. Below the font is the colour (red, yellow or blue) and M'Fd by Fulton Rubber Type Co." Each bottle has a small cork in the top, which are not removable and hardened ink within. Part FFF: Small glass ink bottle. Base is square in shape with a small inset in the centre. Body rises straight from base and rounded in at the shoulders to a cylindrical neck. Mouth flares out and has a flat lip. Glass appears to be black by may just be stained with the black/blue ink that is dried within. Part GGG: Ink pad is rectangular in shape and has an outer box made of aluminium. Lid of box is green and bottom was a gold colour. Printed on the lid is "THE AMERICAN SELF INKING STAMP PAD" in black. Stuck open, the ink pad within is visible. Part HHH: Ink pad is rectangular in shape and has an outer box made of aluminium. The lid is dark blue, and the bottom is gold coloured. On the lid is "EXCELSIOR SELF INKING STAMP PAD" in black. Box is stuck closed. Part III: Small rectangular yellow sponge. Sponge is covered with stains of dark blue and white. Parts JJJ-MMM: Set of four small wooden sticks, possibly used to get letters straight. Rods differ in length and colour; two are red and two are black. Parts NNN & OOO: Print set box. Box is rectangular in shape and is made of cardboard covered with a blue finish. Box seals by the lid sliding over top of the bottom. Bottom is divided into three sections. One section is square in shape and houses the ink. Section is created with a cardboard barrier. A second section is rectangular in shape and houses the presses or stamps. The section is created using an unfinished wooden rectangle with three rows. On the inside of the lid is a yellow-orange rectangular paper tag with "The "Fulton" Sign and Price Markers" in blue font. Also on the tag is a picture of a print set and use and care instructions. Stamped on the tag, with the lettering blocks in blue ink is "MARION KNOX" as well as some other numbers and shapes. On an outer corner of the lid (one that is torn) is a white paper sticker with "810" on it. |

Set was owned and used by the donor's maternal grandparents, Walter and Jane Knox to create signs in their general stores in Allenford and Burgoyne from the early 1900's and into the 1920's. |
