Description |
A set of four wooden shipbuilder's templates. They are all made of thin birch wood and vary in size. a) The smallest piece. It is shaped similar to a triangle with curved edges. There is a rectangle cut out at the pointed end. The back has pencil marks and text. There are three vertical lines in the centre. b) -The mid size piece. There is a main square shape that has slightly rounded edges. There is a rectangle cut out at the top edge. Beside the cut out there is a separate triangle piece that has a slight curved edge. The side piece sticks out from the side but is still attached to the main piece of wood. THere is pencil handwriting that reads "Lock panels" and "No II 38 1/2 Beam" c) A larger size piece of wood. It is a long rectangle shape with curved edges. There is a rectangle shape cut out at the top edge. There is text that reads "No V 41 7/8 Beam. There is also a faint black/blue coloured stamp that reads "8M/M Birch - Batch 848 B R.C.A.F. M.56" d) A larger size piece of wood. It is the same shape as part c) but is slightly longer. It also has the same stamp information but is very faint. There is pencil writing that reads "No IV 42 7/8 beam" |

The templates were used by Nathan Doran. He owned several sawmills and commercial fishing businesses in Stokes Bay, Southampton, Sauble Beach and Wiarton. Between 1934-1950's he was the owner of Saugeen Boat Works. |
