Description |
A cast iron mold to make gill net weights. The mold has two wood handles that support arms of the main body. The main body has a flat bottom with a rectangular shape mold area with a spout at the top. The main body looks similar to a bottle. When the handles open, the mold has two different sides to create the weights. The left side has three main tube shapes with spout holes at the top. The spouts form trech like crevices where the lead would be poured and equally dispersed in each tube shape. The right side has the same tube shape but has a slit down the middle of each one. The slit is a long narrow rectangular barrier cutting the tube in half vertically. There is a hinge in the centre to open and close the mold. |
Provenance |
The mold was used by Morice Doran to create gill net weights for fisherman. He created the weights from lead tubing removed from the United Church's pipe organ in Southampton, Ontario. The weights created in the mold were sold to local fisherman Charles "Sonny" Pilon. |
