Provenance |
The coverlet was made for Catharina Diegel (nee Kohl) in 1868. Catharina was the grandmother of Catherine Diegel who was from Port Elgin. The coverlet was likely passed down to her since they share the same name. The coverlet remained in the family and was passed down to Catherine's son Daniel Roppel, then on to his son Don Roppel. The coverlet was made by J. Noll. The Noll Brothers were the most well-known family of weavers in Waterloo County. Julius, William, and John Noll were the sons of Friedrich Noll, who was a trained weaver from Germany. The Noll family settled in Petersburg, Wilmot Township and Friedrich opened a weaving shop. All three sons were apprentices to their father and when he died in 1867, they took over the weaving business which featured a Jacquard loom. |
