He was a merchant, known as being the first to buy grain from the farmers.

He was also involved in local politics. In 1858, he was elected to the Brant Township Council and was its first Deputy Reeve. He was elected as Reeve from 1859-1861. He was also Warden of Bruce County.

Came to Brant Township in 1850, settling on Concession 5.
