Listed as one of the first innkeepers at Gilbert Hotel, in Southampton (in 1851 Census). Wife Mary Ann was the Innkeeper and Joseph was a cabinet maker/carpenter by trade. In 1859, Joseph enlisted in the 1st Battalion of Bruce as a Sergeant. Joseph was an industrious entrepreneur who began a livery stable, mail and stage coach service, purchased land and was a hotel businessman as well as involved in the development of major roads in Bruce County. By 1851 he had the Gilbert/Walker House; 1862 the Great Western Hotel (corner of High and Albert Streets); and by 1867 the Royal Hotel. |

Born and married in England. Emigrated to Canada about 1849 with 3 children; William, Herbert and Alice. They first settled in York County, Ontario before moving to Bruce County. Recorded as living in Southampton in 1851. Buried at the Old Pioneer Cemetery in Southampton along with several family members. |
