George enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force with his younger brother. He listed "Labourer" as his occupation on his attestation papers in in January 1916. Upon his enlistment, he was assigned to Company C of the 160th Battalion. He was eventually transferred to the 1st Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps and arrived in France in August 1918. Private Kalbfleisch 651334 suffered injuries from a gas attack. He was discharged in 1919. His wartime injuries contributed to his early death in 1944. After the war, he returned to Colpoy's Bay and worked as a sailor in the summer months. |
