The Paddon family came to Port Elgin around 1917. Reg played professional hockey for the St. Louis Flyers, first time champions of the Sinclair Cup (awarded to winners of the American Hockey Association), in the 1934/35 season. Later, he returned to Port Elgin and played for the Port Elgin Keystones in the intermediate division of the Ontario Hockey Association. In the season of 1948/49, at age 40, Reg was voted the province's most valuable player by the Ontario Hockey Association. Aside from his participation in in sports including hockey, fastball and curling, Reg was a leader in the local sporting community in fund raising for minor sports and was a leading member of a group responsible for Port Elgin's first flood lights at Lakeview Park, as well as the establishment of the first mixed curling league in Port Elgin. The Reg Paddon Memorial Trophy was awarded to the mixed curling draw champions of the Port Elgin Curling Club and was established in 1965. Reg was posthumously inducted into the Saugeen Shores Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. |
