J.G. Cooper does not appear in the 1861 census in Bruce County or in the 1867 Directory. He was treasurer of the Township of Brant, commencing in or around 1869. The 1871 Census lists his profession as "Dept. Treasurer", residing in Brant Township. James G. Cooper was mayor of Walkerton in 1873 and 1874. James G. Cooper was appointed Treasurer for the County of Bruce commencing January 1, 1874. (It is not clear whether the mayor and treasurer are one and the same). Mr. Cooper had worked as assistant to previous County Treasurer, A. Sproat, for a number of years. The 1881 Census lists James G. Cooper as a "Co. Treasurer" residing in Brant Township. "The county at large was startled, when, about the last days of February 1887, it became knwon that James G. Cooper, the county treasurer, was a defualter and had fled the country."
