Occupation |
Finnie was born in Canada to parents who arrived here in 1851. He raised his family on the 11th Concession, Kincardine Township, Bruce County, Ontario. Finnie was an outstanding farmer and business leader. He enlisted with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles (117088) in Calgary, Alberta, during the First World War. He received the Military Medal at Sanctuary Wood. At the Battle of the Somme, he was awarded the Military Medal and was seriously wounded. He transferred to the Royal Air Force. Following the war, he took an interest in local politics and served on the Kincardine Township council before becoming a member of the Bruce Municipal Telephone Commission on which he served for 34 years in various capacities. Finnie could understand and speak Gaelic, though he seldom showed it. He always hummed or whistled a Gaelic tune while walking to the barn or cleaning out a box stall. The Gaelic was always heard when he met with the MacLean neighbours. |
