Olive Christina McLaughlin was born December 25, 1903 to parents Catherine Haug and Gilbert McLaughlin. She was "born on adjacent / farm to the west" of the McLaughlin family farm on Concession 10, lot 14 in Elderslie Township, Bruce County, Ontario. Olive and her younger sister Ethel grew up on the McLaughlin family farm and attended school together in Salem. During the First World War, Olive helped the war effort by knitting socks for soldiers. In 1918 the family sold the farm and moved to a house in Scone, across from the location of the Scone school. That same year Olive passed her exams and began to attend Chesley High School. In 1924 Olive attended North Bay Normal School. Once finished with school Olive began teaching, first in Haliburton District and then in Muskoka district. In 1930 she took a course on Home Economics at the MacDonald Institute in Guelph before moving to Toronto where she used her education to teach Home Economics from 1931 until 1966. During the Second World War, Olive volunteered with the Red Cross to aid the war effort. During her time living in Toronto, Olive helped her sister Ethel with the raising of her three children. In later years Olive took care of her mother Catherine (1874-1953) who was living alone in Scone, and visiting Olive in Toronto. After retiring from teaching in 1966, Olive moved back to Scone. Throughout her life Olive traveled all around the world including Hawaii, Europe, and South America. She was also very involved in the community, including founding the "Stonecrafters" , belonging to many naturalist groups, as well as belonging to the Grey Bruce Genealogical Society. On April 15, 2000 Olive passed away at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre in Chesley. She was buried with her mother in Gillies Hill, Salem Presbyterian Cemetery, in Salem. |
