Description |
The Cavalier was a schooner from Sarnia that was transporting lumber on Lake Huron. On the night of Friday August 31, 1906 it tore open its hull on the rocks north of Chantry Island and rapidly sunk. Fortunately, the lighthouse keeper, Captain William McGregor Lambert, was able to intervene and get the crew to shore before any lives were lost. Lambert was awarded a bronze medal from the Royal Canadian Humane Association for the rescue. This incident was one of many that prompted the establishment of a life saving station in Southampton.
