Description

A Port Elgin High School District was created by the Ministry of Education in 1887. The Public School building was sold to the High School Board and the first classes commenced in September 1889 on the south side of Mill Street, just east of Wellington Street (later known as "Wellington Apartments").

A new building was erected at 515 Goderich St., Port Elgin, Ontario, which officially opened in September 1939. In 1951, with the closing of Southampton's Continuation School, Port Elgin High School was reconstituted a district school and became Saugeen District High School.

As the school grew, two new wings, portable classrooms and a portable library were added. One of the additions to the Goderich St. school was completed in 1953.

From 1940 to 1968, Stanley G. Malkin was principal. Then William "Stuart" Cameron, a former student and teacher at the school assumed the principalship.

A new school building opened in September 1975 on County Road 3 at 780 Gustavus St., Port Elgin.
