He first assisted in the Paymasters office in the Ordinance Department concerning the construction of the Rideau Canal in 1827. In or around 1831, he became a teller for Old Commercial Bank in Kingston. From 1841-1851, he was an accountant in the Crown Lands Office, Kingston. He moved to Southampton in 1851 to become the Crown Land Agent for that part of the Huron District that the Municipal Institutions Act constituted as the County of Bruce. He was the first Reeve of Saugeen Township. He was also Indian Commissioner for 25 years and was a commissioned officer of the first Frontenac Militia and was active in service during the Rebellion of 1837-38. |
