Education |
At an early age, W.S. Scott took up study with a view to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church at Jefferson College, New Athens, Ohio. Due to poor health, he was advised to disconinue his ministry studies. He then studied medicine in Toronto for one year, and then at Queen's College, Kinston for two years, graduating in 1854. |
Occupation |
Physician. He practiced in Nassagaweya for about nine months, and then settled in Southampton where he praicticed for about 36 years. In the early days, he practised over the greater part of the North Riding of Bruce County, including the townships of Arran, Amabel, Saugeen, Elderslie and Bruce. He was also a medical attendant of the Indians at Saugeen First Nation. He also sat many years on County Council, most of the time as Reeve. He was the organizer of the Bruce Rifles which was afterwards merged in the 32nd Bruce Battalion. As a member of the Southampton Rifle Co., he travelled to Goderich and Port Edward to respond to expected Fenian Raids. He was Sergeant Major of the 32nd during its entire existence. Politically, Dr. Scott was an ardent Conservative and on several occasions was President of the North Bruce Conservative Association. |

Received Canada General Service Medal for service during the Fenian Raids, when attack was expected at Goderich and Point Edward, June 2, 1866 to July 15, 1866. |
