He was appointed deputy provincial surveyor and worked in the Southwestern Ontario area, including much of the northern Escarpment area. His survey projects included the Garafraxa road 1837, Owen Sound town plot 1840, Sydenham Township 1842, the Toronto-Sydenham Road 1848, and the Keppel Indian Reserve 1862. |

Rankin came to Upper Canada as a child in 1820 with his family. He lived in Owen Sound from 1850 to 1884. |
